Dinosaurs, Indians, cowboys, lots of State history, old pictures, kid fun and a fabulous Gift Shop all under one roof!
Be sure to include the Wyoming State Museum in your plans when you visit Cheyenne WY for a walk through the past. It is one of our city’s gems. It will take you about an hour to see the exhibits unless your children end up in the kid zone.
I love the Wyoming State Museum! I have wonderful memories of playing with my kids in the kid area and showing them around the museum. We went to the Museum to gather pictures and Wyoming items for my nephew in Boston when he was doing a Flat Robbie project. I’ve picked up a discovery trunk there for my son’s 4th grade class. But, above all it has one of the best gift shops in Cheyenne. I go every year to buy their annual historical calendar for several family members. I always leave with bags full of jams, books, toys, jewelry, ornaments, dish towels and even band-aids! Beth, the manager, always treats me like I am her only customer and she seems to remember me from year to year. It is one of my favorite Christmas tasks!
The area created for children is a blast! They can dress up, play games, learn while they play, use their imagination and just have some good old fashioned fun! I hear the area is being re-done, so I’ll be excited to see it. They also have family days. Family days is a free program that provides families with fun and educational opportunities to explore Wyoming. Check it out on the first Saturday of each month September to May from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. You’ll find a different theme each month.
The mission of the Wyoming State Museum is to serve as an educational, historical, and cultural institution, whose goal is to collect, preserve, and interpret artifacts that reflect the human and natural history of Wyoming and the Rocky Mountain West. I say they are doing a fabulous job!
