Space – the Final Frontier

National Space Day is observed annually on the first Friday in May.  This day is dedicated to the extraordinary achievements, benefits and opportunities in the exploration and use of space.  The goal of National Space Day is to promote math, science, technology and engineering education in young people to inspire them to pursue a career in science, especially a career in space-related jobs. — HT: National Calendar Day

“Space: the final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise. Its continuing mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no one has gone before.” — Dialogue from the movies and TV series Star Trek

Most are fascinated with space – the final frontier.  The allure of what it would be like to get strapped to a rocket and go hurtling through the airless void of space has long captured the hearts and minds of millions. Several examples of sci-fi books have existed since at least the 1800s and the very first space movie Le Voyage dans la Lune was filmed in 1902.

Outer space is actually only about 62 miles straight up, but the overwhelming majority of the world’s almost 8 billion people will never get to visit.  In fact, only 536 people have ever gone to space. Yet, that doesn’t mean we cannot enjoy pictures and videos taken by things like the Hubble Telescope or the International Space Station.

From outer space, our world can be seen for what it really is – just a small dot of blue and green circling the sun in a vast universe.
