We are not trying to tell you that you are living in a money pit when we say, “Sell It & Move It” but we are telling you to give yourself permission to move on and find the right fit before you get too invested.
In the charming 80’s movie called, “The Money Pit,” Tom Hanks and Shelley Long buy a “fixer-upper” and no matter what they do, they cannot seem to make improvements. The wisdom of this storyline is one that some have unfortunately experienced first hand. We don’t want you to be this person! So here are some tips to help you assess whether or not it is time to sell your home and move.
- Do your due diligence. Make sure your home has good bones. You may have recently bought your home so this could have been assessed during the inspections but sometimes if you have lived in it a while you haven’t looked at it from a critical lens. You can always hire a professional to come in and provide an assessment to tell you if what you are planning to invest in will be able to yield returns.
- Check your surroundings! Your landscaping may have larger trees and these can be incredibly damaging if they are weak, especially in Wyoming’s winds. Thus, it is important to monitor this and establish that your home is safely surrounded. Sometimes these landscaping items can be a huge expense and relocating can be more cost-effective.
- Rainy day limitations. You don’t want to keep putting your savings into your house knowing you may not reap the benefits. Like a car, there is a point in time to push, pull, drag it in to trade your vehicle and you don’t want your house to ever get to this state. So be aware of how much money you have and if it is more worth your money to invest in moderate home improvements for a sale or if you have the actual funds for the long-haul.
The overall lesson of this is to really understand the expenses at-hand and make a wise decision with your future in mind.
