July 4th is a memorable holiday for our community because we have such an incredibly close tie with the military. Laramie County and the City of Cheyenne were founded the same year the military base took roots near Crow Creek. Over time our Military Base Fort D. Russell evolved into FE Warren Air Force Base where the U.S. Air Force has the 90th Missile Wing. We have been talking about the nuclear arm of the triad for decades now. Our community heavily advocated that Congress fund the modernization of our nuclear weapons since they have not been updated since their conception. The appropriation of the funds happened in the fall of 2021. At the time, they referred to this project as Ground-Based Strategic Deterrent (GBSD) or the next-generation intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM).
However, recently the U.S. Air Force revealed a new name. They are officially going to be named the LGM-35A. This milestone is so important because it is official that Northrop Grumman will develop the new weapon, and it has a name! Finally, after years of united effort between the U.S. Military, the three United States Missile Bases, and their communities this project can move forward with an official name.
We love our community and know we wouldn’t be where we are today without the military. The future of Cheyenne is still moving in lockstep with our air force base, and we pledge to maintain that. As real estate professionals, we look forward to preparing our area for the influx of workers who will be contractors upon installation of the new weapon system and to the active-duty military who will be managing the LGM-35A once live in the coming decade.
