Career Pivot to Real Estate
Have you ever encountered someone who made a complete career shift and asked yourself how?
We have done this several times because we see professionals enter the real estate field frequently and from various backgrounds. You could be someone previously in customer service or an engineer and in this instance we’re sharing here, an educator. Erin Tempel made the switch from teaching to real estate a year ago and hasn’t looked back. She has found that her teaching experience has been optimal for her life as a Realtor, as the basic skills around educating people throughout the real estate process are similar to the those she used in the classroom, and it requires interpersonal skills that apply to all businesses.
We have found this to be the case for other agents as they make a career change. That is why when assessing real estate professionals for our agency, we don’t look at their experience in the field directly but more about their abilities and their desire to apply them toward their passion in real estate. Here are some common skills we look for in real estate professionals and ones that we’ve witnessed were a possession of Erin’s when she came from the classroom before beginning her new career in real estate:
- Connections. Building relationships is essential when establishing a foundation of trust.
- Communication. Communicating with clients and understanding their desires is an essential aspect of real estate, a tool teachers use too.
- Flexibility. Adapting in a moment is challenging and essential when working in real estate because each transaction centers around creative problem-solving.
Would you like to learn more about the characteristics we look for in a real estate professional? Set up a meeting with the owners. They would be more than happy to visit with you about their brokerage, the real estate professional successes, and challenges. Their honesty can help determine if this career pivot is a good choice.
