An Unforgettable Experience for Special Kids and the Volunteers Who Cheer Them On

One of my absolute favorite events during Cheyenne Frontier Days™ is the Challenge Rodeo. Each year, I’m lucky enough to volunteer at this heartwarming event, and it never fails to leave a lasting impression. To share more about its history and impact, I reached out to longtime volunteer and coordinator, Will Luna.

The Challenge Rodeo is a unique event that gives children with special needs the chance to experience the thrill of the rodeo, including roping, wrangling, and even riding, all while working toward the prize of a coveted belt buckle.

“The Challenge Rodeo is one of the best events Cheyenne Frontier Days™ has to offer,” said Luna. “Partnering with Laramie County School District #1, students with special needs get to participate in a real, live rodeo performance. We want to let them be part of the Daddy of ’Em All as well.”

Children are nominated by their teachers and paired with dedicated volunteer ‘buddies’ who help guide and cheer them on throughout the day. The two-day event is carefully designed to ensure a safe, inclusive environment where every child can shine.

“We’ve got everything—bull riding, bareback, roping, and even baby goats the kids can pet, which is always a favorite,” Luna shared. “There’s barrel racing, steer wrestling—the full rodeo experience, just modified so every child can participate.”

Founded in 1995, the Challenge Rodeo has become a cherished CFD tradition, thanks to the incredible support of staff and volunteers. And for the kids, the memories and the smiles last long after the final event.
