1. Safety First

  • Test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

  • Check GFCI outlets and circuit breakers to ensure everything is in working order.

2. Keep the Cold Out

  • Inspect windows and doors for drafts — and seal them if necessary.

  • Reverse ceiling fans to spin clockwise, pushing warm air down into the room.

3. Protect Your Home’s Exterior

  • Clean gutters and downspouts to prevent ice dams.

  • Inspect your roof, foundation, and siding for damage.

  • Trim trees and bushes to prevent broken branches during heavy snow.

4. Indoor Prep

  • Schedule an HVAC inspection and cleaning to keep your system running efficiently.

  • Clean dryer vents, major kitchen appliances, and carpets.

5. Call in the Pros When Needed
Sometimes DIY isn’t the best option. Whether it’s a chimney sweep, roofer, or electrician, having a list of trusted professionals on hand can make life much easier. If you don’t already have that network, I’d be happy to connect you with reliable local providers.

By setting aside time now to knock these items off your list, you’ll enjoy a safer, cozier, and more worry-free winter season.
